Summary: This dissertation focuses on Creative Economics, with emphasis on its three main pillars: innovation, sustainability and culture in its interrelation with the promotion of economic development. The main objective of this work is to identify and discuss its concept and its manifestations, its historical development and the current debate about its potential as a tool for promoting economic development. The methodology used for the development of this work was the theoretical analysis through a literature review, approaching the main concepts and the evolution history of the topic, with the aim of identifying the panorama of the creative economy worldwide and its main applications in Brazil. Furthermore, it sought to examine the contribution of the three pillars of promotion of creative economy: culture, innovation and sustainability from initiatives of the Brazilian Federal Government. The Ministry of Culture of the Brazilian Federal Government launched, in 2011, the Plan of the Department of Creative Economy, used as an analytical basis for this research, becoming an important guideline for the application of the creative economy in Brazil. In conclusion, it points to the need for theoretical and conceptual developments in the creative economy in order to function as an effective tool for promoting economic development.
